Additionally, the player can collect 200 Power Stars, 80 more than the original game and 50 more than the first remake.Īs in its preceding versions, the game features a diverse host of abilities given to the players. Unlike previous versions, which had a total of 15 courses, this game features 5 new courses for a total of 20 courses. Like in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, the game's hub is Princess Peach's Castle, featuring several rooms and corridors from which courses can be accessed through paintings or sometimes even the walls themselves. The six heroes continue to travel through the worlds' painting, collecting the rest of the Power Stars in order to save Princess Peach from Bowser's grasp. Yoshi decides to investigate, eventually collecting Power Stars and rescuing Mario, Luigi, Toad, Wario and Waluigi. Yoshi then meets Lakitu, who explains that the castle has just been attacked by Bowser and his minions, and Mario & friends didn't return from inside the castle.Īs Yoshi tries to enter the castle, Lakitu informs Yoshi that the castle was locked by Bowser's minions and that the main door key was stolen by a wandering rabbit. Upon arriving, the airships begin to flee as several enemies retreat. Curious as to what is happening, Yoshi runs through the panicking Toad Village towards Peach's Castle. Scared, Lakitu retreats to look for help.Ī sleepy Yoshi is suddenly awakened by some loud noises some time after, and as he finally wakes up, he notices the airships surrounding the castle grounds. Several airships appear from behind the castle, and a bunch of Bowser minions start to lock every door in the castle. Lakitu tries to follow Mario and his friends when they arrive, but quickly loses track of them after they enter. However, the letter was actually written and sent by Bowser who had already captured the princess, expecting Mario (and co.) to arrive at the castle so his minions could capture them. Mario decides to go with some company, bringing Luigi, Toad, Wario and Waluigi along. The game is also revealed to include many more courses, Power Stars, bosses and secrets, as well as local co-op multiplayer. Similarly to the Nintendo DS remake, Mario is not the only playable character: Yoshi, Luigi and Wario join him in his adventure to rescue the princess once again, along with two new venturers: Toad and Waluigi.
As such, it has improved graphics, storyline, gameplay and many other new elements.
The game is a new enhanced remake and sequel of the 1996 game Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64, and in turn of the 2004 remake Super Mario 64 DS for the Nintendo DS as well.
